Pag-ibig

mahirap ikubli na ako ay umiibig
sapagkat ang aking puso
ay sadyang nagiging maindakin (rejoice).

Ulan

at hayaan mo kaming magtampisaw
sa kaligayahan ng sandali
na ayaw ko rin namang lumipas
umihip ka pa at lumakas
upang hayaan niyang

pawang luntiang dahon lamang
ng aking naglalakihang mga sanga
ang maiaalay ko
upang maging kanlungan

subalit nakapag-tataka
noong panahon ng taglagas
hindi mo ako iniwan
nanatili ka hanggang sa mag-talamig
binalot mo ako ng iyong yakap
sa karikitan (cuteness) mo
ikaw ang naging kumot ko
sa pag-iisa ko
ikaw ang naging langit ko

sa unang pagkakataon
umiyak ako
nang makita kita isang umaga
na nalalagasan ng mga dahon
tila wala ka nang buhay
naghihingalo at wala ng lakas
at sa pagkalanta mo

Disyerto

itinuturing ko na parang 'hamog'
ang nagtatapon sa akin ng pagtingin.

kasi ako ang tuyong lupa
na sabik na sabik na maangkin (mahalin)
ng sinomang hahaplos
ng banayad sa akin.

kahit panandali lang
at panakaw ang sandali ng paghamog ...
ang alaala ng nakaraang mahamog na kadiliman
ay laging nanariwa sa akin
sa gitna ng nakakapasong sikat
ng isang bagong umaga
sa tigang na lupa
na uhaw sa pagmamahal.

Hamog

dumantay sa tuyong dahon
ang halik ng hamog
upang pupugin ng pananabik
ang nag-aalinlangang kahoy

dahan-dahang gumapang
sa gitna ng kadiliman
ang banayad na haplos
sa kagubatang tuyot

magkatalik sa buong magdamag
sa saliw ng himig ng kagubatan
sa katahimikan ng daigdig
kapwa puso ay nasaling

pagsapit ng umaga
mamaalam ang hamog
damong ligaw na nadiligan
mananabik sa kanyang ala-ala.

Fairy Tales

BED TIME STORY-- after a dad read a fairy tale to a child:

daughter: do fairy tales come true?

dad: (hug the child) when you grow up, you would understand that life is not all about happy endings... perhaps, you will even forget all about cinderella and sleeping beauty as you face the reality of life... but for me... you will always be my princess. (kissed the child). good night and sweet dreams.

Witty

thanks for not loving me
you just taught me how to become a stronger person

I became stronger
because I can still love you no matter what.

story telling

story telling is an art. most of the time people don't like to hear my stories because they simply don't want to see me.

Halik

iniiwasan mo man ako
pero wala akong magagawa
dahil laging nagku-krus ang ating landas
kung saan at kailan
kailangan kitang pakitunguhan

MAHAL KITA...

Bawat Pasko

Pangarap kang mahagkan, hangad makasalo
Sana, makapiling ka ngayong Pasko...

Paskong anong lamig, Paskong nananabik

At tuluyang lamunin ako
Nang sinapupunan ng kadiliman

Gusto kong sumigaw
Dahil sa pagkatakot at sindak
Pero walang boses na pumapalahaw
Sa aking tinig na naumid (muted)

Magdadasal ako
Nang panalanging tinalikdan ko na
Tsaka magigising ako
Habol hininga
Pawisang pawisan
Umiiyak
Mula sa bangungot
Nang aking pagtakas sa Dyos

Ganito pala yung tinatawag ng konsensya (conscience)
Kung saan nangungusap ang Dyos

Maaaring pagkatapos ng hilakbot
Nang bangungot na sa akin ay tumakot
Magrarason (reason out) na naman ako
Na hindi maaaring mangyari
Ang lahat ng ito

Kapag binabalikan ko ito
Pilit kong inuunawa ito
Maaaring ang tinatakasan ko
Ay ang aking maka-Diyos na sarili
Kung saan sa panahon kung nasaan ako
Pinalitan ko siya ng yaman at katanyagan
Nang mundo na walang kasiyahan
Dahil lagi itong gutom at laging uhaw

Ngayon nagtatanong ako
Ito na ba ang panahon ng pagbabago?
Maaaring ito ang pamamaraan ng Diyos
Upang bumalik ako sa piling Nya

Maaaring sa bawat isa
Kumakatok ang Diyos sa ating lahat
Sa iba't-ibang sitwasyon at pamamaraan
Kung saan at kailan natin Siya mauunawaan at masusumpungan

Bokasyon

Bagamat nagbabakasakali lamang
Kung aking masusumpungan
Nananatili pa rin ako
Sa kabila ng aking kahinaan

Kung sakaling hindi man mapasaakin ito
Mauunawaan ko rin sa bandang huli
Na ang aking biyayaya
Ay ang pagtugon at paghihintay

At sa susunod na aking hakbang
Na isa uling pagbabakasakali
Maaaring masumpungan ko na rin
Ang landas na aking tatahakin

Hindi ako naliligaw
Subalit hindi rin ako sigurado
Malabo man ang paglalakbay
Umaasa pa rin ako

Tanging sa habag at grasya lamang
Magkaroon ng ganap na katuparan
Ang buong buhay na katanungan ko
Na masasagot lamang
Sa oras ng aking kamatayan...

Pulubi

buti pa nga yung mga pulubi,
andaling magdecide about love.

tapos every year makikita mo habang pagala gala sila,

i'm wondering,
baka yung mere sufferings nila

Out of the Blue

Out of the blue, this day.. I was told that I was not doing well at work... that things not good had been said against me... I felt sad...despite my hard efforts to be a good and patient nurse, I still fall short of their bar of excellence....

I feel humbled, I feel ashamed, I am brought down low... yet I offered this pain and sorrow at Mass a while ago... and together with our father Founder, Blessed Francisco Palau, OCD, i say "God allows my defects to humble me."

thank you Lord, for giving me this grace to be humble before You and to ask the grace to be more humble when I face You in my patients and their watchers... amen.

A PRECIOUS GIFT: A Reflection about the Gift of Life amidst the RH Bill

THE FILM: THE BIOLOGY OF PRENATAL DEVELOPMENT

The documentary film, The Biology of Prenatal Development (it could also be watched from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FYjhbCMYoE&playnext=1&list=PLC32680F4224395B6&feature=results_main), which was distributed by the National Geographic, has followed the beginning of life from conception to birth. With the use of a sophisticated high-end camera and state of the art 3D imaging system, the documentary film has allowed the viewers to follow the rapid and highly detailed development of a single-cell human zygote into a fully developed fetus inside the mother’s womb.

There are so many technical terms that caught my attention. I am happy that the writer and the producer of the film recognized conception, the union of sperm and egg cell, each with 23 chromosomes, as the beginning of life. From the film, I quote: “pregnancy in humans normally lasts approximately 38 weeks as measured from the time of fertilization, or conception, until birth.” I also quote, “…during the first 8 weeks following fertilization, the developing human is called an embryo, which means growing within."  This period is characterized by the formation of most major body systems. And from the completion of 8 weeks until the end of pregnancy, "the developing human is called a fetus," which means "unborn offspring."

From conception, it is only after 24 to 30 hours after fertilization, the zygote completes its first cell division. By 3 to 4 days after fertilization, the dividing cells of the embryo became a spherical shape called morula. The embryo became a blastocyst after 4 to days when a cavity forms within this ball of cells. The embryo traversed the uterine tube and implant itself in the uterine wall of the mother. Following implantation, placenta develops. For 2 to 4 weeks, germ layers and organ formation took place.

After four weeks, the amniotic fluid starts to surround the embryo. Amniotic fluid protects the baby. This time, there are the formation of the brain, heart limbs and lungs. While liver and kidneys start to develop after five weeks. By six to eight weeks, the embryo begins to make spontaneous and reflexive movements. The hands are visibly developing and the rest of the organs are maturing.  Although there is no air in the uterus, the embryo displays intermittent breathing motions.  After nine weeks, the fetus starts to swallow, sigh, and stretch. The fetal period continues until birth. Before the birth of the fetus, hearing, feeling and smelling were already developed.

REFLECTION

The movie has made me realized that life is a precious gift from God. Conception is the very start of personhood wherein God breathe the breath of life, the soul, to each human life. The human person, created in the image of God, is a being at once corporeal and spiritual.  We cannot separate God in the creation of human life for every human ‘person’ is willed by God; each is imprinted with God’s image.   Each one's dignity does not come from the work they do, but from the persons they are. The dignity of the human person is rooted in his creation in the image and likeness of God.

This little life in the womb of a mother is a little person who cannot defend himself yet. He is not merely a thing like any other utilitarian would want to think of him. He is a ‘life’ with a dignity coming from God. He is a person with full of bright potentialities when nourished and let to grow with love and compassion. He is a son to his father and mother who both offered him their genes to start living and growing. He is a little person who is created by God, a little person who has a purpose of his own. He is a being in the image of God…who is not just something, but someone.

We cannot limit our understanding of a person to his immediate capability of self-knowledge, of self-possession and of freely giving himself and entering into communion with other persons. Because each one of us is in need of time to grow. We are in need of time to reach our potentials. All of us were once a child who was so dependent to the caring of our parents. Going back to our childhood, we were once afraid to take a step to cross the street without holding the hands of our parents. Much more, when we were inside the womb of our mother, when we do not know yet what has to come for us? But like anyone else, when we were inside the womb of our mother, we already have the precious gift of life that God has endowed us. Like anyone else, we already have the human soul from the start of our conception. And that same life with a soul was already there even before the moment of our implantation to our mother’s womb as most legislators and doctors would claim and decide when and where we become a person in favor of RH Bill.

Promoting human dignity implies above all affirming the inviolability of the right to life, from conception to natural death, the first among all rights and the condition for all other rights of the person.  According to Pope John II, “laws which legitimize the direct killing of innocent human beings through abortion or euthanasia are in complete opposition to the inviolable right to life proper to every individual; they thus deny the equality of everyone before the law. ” I am starting to be afraid because if the RH Bill would be fully enacted as a law, it would lead us to this end—a society so free to do his caprices and society playing God with other’s life. The bill is a threat for every defenseless and every unborn life.  In my opinion, RH Bill is a water gate that would flood us with licentiousness to take other’s life where we would deny the sanctity of each life. What lies beyond this bill is lee way for abortion and euthanasia which have become preeminent threats to human dignity because they directly attack life itself. Whatever insults human dignity… they poison human society, but they do more harm to those who practice them than those who suffer from the injury.

In broad daylight, those who fight for the approval of the RH Bill already twisted the original biblical mandate of God to us: “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. ” Most of our legislators has exhibited their lost of trust in God. They are unanimous in reasoning that they are so afraid that we are bloating as an over populated hungry nation. I am hoping that there's no personal interest behind all these. In this political and spiritual battle, most tend to lose their identity as being a ‘creation of God for all—a person, (sonare, sound back) who is open to communication. Legislators are expected to be the voice of their people who are their constituents. What they have relayed to the nation via national television is the pulse of those whom they are representing. Admittedly, the occasion has divided our opinions as a Church. All of a sudden, most of us Catholics seems to forgot the every Sunday Apostle’s Creed we always recite where we claim, “I believe in God…” and “I believe in the Holy Catholic Church.”  In this occasion, I am reflecting on the question: “Do we fail as a Church?” In my opinion, no, we fail only as ‘teachers’ of our flock. They do not already recognize the voice of God in us because, maybe, they cannot understand the language we are now using.

I believe that the legislators who favored the RH Bill has inflicted serious wound in our society and our culture. They are the very people who ought to be society’s promoters and defenders of human life...even to the smallest scale, we see them as defenders of the weak and the incapable to defend themselves. The biting reality is already here, RH Bill is now gaining support. The block favoring it is getting stronger. The RH bill's bait is growing stronger and sooner or later we would be making a covenant with death. But despite of the present situation, we should still urge those Catholic officials who choose to depart from teaching of the Church on the inviolability of human life in their public life to consider the consequences based on their conscience for in their hands is law that would lead others into serious sin: “Thou shall not kill.” We must stand against the present relativism which tends to lead all of us into utilitarianism.

Utilitarianism is a civilization of production and of use, a civilization of "things" and not of "persons", a civilization in which persons are used in the same way as things are used. In the context of a civilization of use, woman can become an object for man, children a hindrance to parents, the family an institution obstructing the freedom of its members.

We must rekindle the spirit of God in every family. Each family is a community of God. Each family is a protector of every weak and of the unborn. Let us appeal to every parents, let us reach out to them to remind them that when they become parents-- spouses receive from God the gift of a new responsibility. Their parental love is called to become for the children the visible sign of the very love of God, "from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named."

Any human society, if it is to be well-ordered and productive, must lay down as a foundation this principle, namely, that every human being is a person, that is, his/her nature is endowed with intelligence and free will. Indeed, precisely because s/he is a person, s/he has rights and obligations flowing directly and simultaneously from her/his very nature.

When RH Bill becomes a fully established law, we can't be open anymore to express our opinions against it. We will be dead-silent. What we can offer by that time are concrete alternatives which not every parishes have as of the moment. Our silence would not mean our blind-obedience to the implemented law. The virtue of prudence will guide all of us and hope will always remain as our inspiration to carry on.

Like the rest, some of us are doing what we can contribute. And we are doing it urgently. We are earnestly praying that more and more hearts would listen to our small voices-- who are not as intelligent as they are but simple principles which are simply rooted from our Christian conscience which is based on Christian truth.

CONCLUSION:

Human dignity originates from God and is of God because we are made in God’s own image and likeness.  Human life, no matter how small a life is, remains sacred because the human person is the most central and clearest reflection of God among us. It is necessary for us to respect life because life is a precious gift of God to each one of us. We should not create it nor take it with our own hands. We are mere stewards only of God. We are mere stewards only of this precious gift of God. Beyond ourselves, as persons who communicate with one another, each one of us is a brother and sister’s keeper… for we are all responsible to one another as brothers and sisters in Christ, as children of God.

Buhay

Loneliness

look around you
there are so many 'people' who care about you
but still,
you chose 'loneliness' to be at your side... WHY?

Den Mar

Kahilingan

malimit
kapag ako ay nananalangin
marami akong hinihingi sa Diyos
kasi marami akong kailangan
marami akong gustong gawin

nagrereklamo ako
kasi

Amen.

Scouts' Prayer
(translated on January 12, 2015)

Our heavenly Father who created us all
Once again, we are gathered here in your Divine Presence
Together, we give You praise for all Your glory
That is reflected through all of Your creations which is the work of Your divine hands.

We lift to You, dear God, all of our self
Accept us as your children and bless us as Your servants
We ask You to teach our hearts to love and to purify our minds
So that we can hear Your voice clearly for us to obey Your words.

We are so thankful for all of the graces You have given us
There is no perfect word that can best express the deep joy we feel
Because of the countless chances You have given us
For us to be gathered together, here again
As brothers (and sisters) under the one banner of Scouting.

We lift to You, O God, all of our worries--
(Specially, our beloved ones who we left back in our homes
and who are waiting for our safe return)
We ask You to take care of them while we not yet with them
We lay them all in Your merciful and loving hands
Together will all the gifts You have given us that we are offering back to You.

May You always bless us, our dear God
May Your Holy Spirit be with us in every moment of our lives
Teach us to see and appreciate You in the presence of one another
For only through Your divine inspiration
We could truly love and serve wholeheartedly those who are in need.

Teach us, O Lord, to love and to forgive
So that we can start to change the world we are living
May Your will be done unto us, O God
Make us all your instrument of PEACE! Amen.

Zacchaeus

On Luke 19:1-10

I can imagine that from that tall sycamore tree, the Lord invited the small statured Zaccheus to come down. Zaccheus who was bitterly accused by the community to be a sinner for being a tax collector is the same person whom Jesus himself chose to stay and eat with his disciples. Significantly, Zaccheaus who was afar where Jesus was preaching was hand-picked by the Lord himself; and was invited by the Lord himself.

Going to our own vocation story, perhaps similarly, Jesus’ call to each one of us is so much personal and unique. Like Zacchaeus and the disciples, we are all called to respond to God’s call. But primarily, we are all called first to holiness. From Zacchaeus, I understand the work of the grace of God even Zacchaeus remained to live his ordinary life. With his immediate response to Jesus’ invitation he embraced a deeper and a newer mission in life which is to remain holy in the ordinariness of his life. Zacchaeus from that time on became a witness to God’s love as he expressed it through his sincere love of his neighbors.

By loving our neighbor we experience the presence of God’s kingdom in our midst. It is easily said than done. For me, I found it hard to walk the talk. I must admit that I am, most of the time, so incorrigible and uncharitable to you as my brothers. Unlike the changed Zaccheaus, I am a hypocrite follower of Christ because my life has not been a good example of bearing witness to Christ.

But there is something different about God. Beyond the sinfulness of a person he always sees the potential within him.

Perhaps, this is how I understand God who works his act of mercy on me. It is through this mysterious grace slowly unfolding in me that my life is clinging into. Metanoia, the change of heart and mind is a grace of God. It is an act faith by totally surrendering to God’s will because of our love for God. Truly, Zacchaeus was a follower of God worth emulating. Zaccheus’ simple life became God’s sign by becoming a true witness to the love of God.

Pasensya

Pagbibigay

Nang ako'y mayaman
at nag-uumapaw ang mga biyaya
Itinuring kong
ako ang pinagpala ng Diyos

Nang makita kita
na lugmok at lubhang nagdurusa
Ang akala ko
ikaw ang sinusubok ng Diyos

Subalit sa katagalan...
mula nang ikaw ay aking talikuran
Nabatid kong ako pala ang sinusubok
At ikaw ang pinagpapala

Ilang ulit akong sinubok ng pagkakataon
upang maging mapagbigay
Sa isang tulad mong
ilang ulit kong tinalikdan.

Demonic Possession

I remember, our batch gave a recollection at Paridise Farm High School sometime in year 2010. I held a session on 'inner healing.' A session about forgiveness and going back to Jesus. In a sense, it's a renewal session.

By the end of my talk after reading my recollection material (see:  http://denmar1978.blogspot.com/b/post-preview?token=PuVeszoBAAA.hs88sh2mx7SfAjGoNLHB0A.xGlAPhfVVlKrKjSQtud9UQ&postId=5937772655069989852&type=POST ), most students were already crying.

When I said my last few words, “isuko nyo na ang lahat kay Jesus” suddenly, a teenage girl started shouting, “Huwag kang lumapit!” Her eyes suddenly rolled then turned into all black. Her voice changed. She shouted so loud that our prayer session in that room was suddenly interrupted. I said “In Jesus’ name” but the more she shrieked until she collapsed and went into seizure. Brothers Leo, Rex, Renoir, Felix and Ian went into our room to pacify the commotion. But another girl from another corner suddenly shouted, “Huwag kang lumapit!” as if there was an unseen terrifying person. I said again, “In Jesus’ name.” Then her voice changed, shouting at me, “itigil mo yan!” Other students were already terrified.

Leo and I attended her. When we prayed the ‘Our Father,’ I felt a very strong blow. I was astounded; I just don’t know how did that unexpected event happened. Br. Leo continued praying. I asked Leo, “naramdaman mo?” And Leo told me, “Oo, naramdaman ko rin.” There was a black thing which rushed from out of nowhere.

When both of the girls were already calm, we brought them to the the school’s clinic to rest. Brother Ian, as the emcee, closed my interrupted talk through a prayer. Everybody was so silent. Nobody dared to talk. Everybody in that room was in the state of shock.

It was only during our class in Spiritual Theology under Fr. Syquia, the exorcist of the Archbishop of Manila, that I understood that evil spirits are active in our midst. What they want is our attention taken away from Jesus. They don’t want us to love God. They don’t want us to go near God. They don’t want us to call on Jesus’ name.

But when they hear us saying the name of Jesus, the name above all name, they start to tremble and start to be afraid. Father Syquia advised us to “send them to the foot of the cross.”

After everything subsided, while having our dinner that night, Br. Of course that was a hell and frightening day for all of us. Rex, the ever ‘nerbiyoso’ among our batch just want to have a sort of ‘relief,’ ‘an airing out’ of that eerie experience. All throughout that afternoon, brothers Renoir and Joseph remained silent. Br.

And I realized from then on, “Oo nga, natakot ang Demonyo sa amin… kasi si Jesus ay 'nanahang ganap sa aming lahat.'” Truly, the Holy Eucharist that we receive every time we participate in the Holy Mass is a glimpse of eternity in heaven, wherein in the Holy Name of Jesus, every knee must bend. The evil spirit knew that and with Jesus in us, he cannot do any more harm but to leave in Jesus' name.

AFTERTHOUGHTS:

I cannot believe that it happened. I want to believe that what has transpired to the two students was only a psychological breakdown. But being interviewed separaterly in different rooms where we brought them, they have the same story: they've seen the black silhouette coming to them. They have the same description of their haunting vision. The two students were not friends, they don't have the chance to talk to one another, they came from different sections.

One thing was common to both of them, they cannot forgive, they were both motivated by a very deep seated anger which was rooted from their own family experiences. Much worse than that, they admitted that they hated God. In my personal interview with them, they admit that they don't believe in God anymore. And that recollection was the time that they needed to 'disbond' themselves from the evil works of the devil, but the devil won't let them go. The evil spirit don't want them to forgive and to move on. The evil spirit don't want them to embrace Jesus.

In recollection and retreat giving, we realized the importance of exorcising the venue first by a simple deliverance prayer that could be said by lay people (Fr. Syquia's first volume on Exorcism has it).  It is helpful that there are prayer warriors to counter-act with evil spirits. And most of all, speakers and participants (if there's a chance) should have their proper disposition by attending mass and receiving the Holy Eucharist.

Although, this was an isolated case, faith really matters. We were thankful to God that we hold on to the promise of Jesus that where ever there are two or three gathered together, Jesus will always be present.

AFTER THREE YEARS--
A TALK WITH BR. RENOIR, SSS (has a gift to sense the presence of the elementals)

During our lunch, Br. Renoir and I had a chance to reminisce the past. "Mapuno kasi sa lugar." He said to me. "More or less, merong mga galang ispiritu sa ganung klaseng lugar." He added, "hindi iyon nag-iisa, marami iyon."

I told him, "actually, that was a very eerie matter for me, after three years, ngayon ko lang nga naisip na alalahanin iyon kasi dahil iyon ang Gospel reading ngayon at nagkataong ako rin ang sharer."

I affirm what he had said, "Oo, nga.

"Mama Mary is accompanied with Angels to defend us always," Br. Renoir said.

A REFLECTION OF A FRANCISCAN PRIEST

When there's an opportunity, when there's no class, specially on Sundays, I usually hear mass at the Sta. Clara monastery at Katipunan, Quezon City. It so happened that the Gospel during that Sunday was about demons.

On the priest's homily, he mentioned that demons in our time decided not to reveal themselves. In our time, usually, we are not afraid anymore on 'duwende,' 'nuno sa punso,' 'tikbalang,' and the like-- it's because we are not afraid of them anymore and we are not fascinated anymore to them. So they changed their way of attacking us. Before, they reveal themselves just to show to us that they are more powerful than God-- that they can heal and do miracles. But now, at the age of Science, suddenly, they became myth. They decided not to reveal themselves for us to think that there's no God.

They cannot enslaved us anymore out of fear so they enslaved us out of pleasure. They can affect our senses by luring us into the desire of our flesh.

Biblical Reading:

Ephesians 6:10-20

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; 16besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19and also for me, that utterance may be given me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains; that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

Ay ang magmahal at wala nang iba.

The Unknown Scout

On Responsibilities

As a Scout, i found out that there are endless ways of cooking egg. but the best, i think, is simply to cook it using a frying pan.
simple solutions to simple problems are just there around the corner. most of the time, the problem with egg is not how to cook it but how to wash the dishes later.
