Sentencing a 9 or 12 Year Old Juvenile Delinquent to Jail?

pic source: http://cpcabrisbane.org/Kasama/2005/V19n3/Images/PREDA2.JPG

It could be a flood gate to our society's many 'immaturities' :
1.lowering the voting age to nine (9) years old.
2.allowing a nine year old to seek job instead of going to school.
3.marrying at the tender age of nine year old.
4.legally represent himself without the consent of his parents at the age of nine.
(Could they buy guns at the age of nine?)
The root of the problem is their lack of parental care, good role modeling, and guidance.
Ni hindi pa nga fully developed ang brain nila to decide on their own. If we give-up on them, we will take away their opportunity to become children who are in need of understanding, patience, and second chances. We will condemn their childhood with imprisonment, a severe punishment designed for grown-ups.
Why can't we understand that the grown-ups were the reason why they became who they are now. They were manipulated and asked to do things na hindi pa nila naiintindihan... It is not about the crime but their curiosity that is being abused and corrupted by their evil mentors.
For a child, imitation is the first stage of learning. Their involvement with crimes is not about doing something good nor evil but to please those people whom they consider significant to their life.
It is better to teach them how to control themselves; than, making a bill that will control them thru imprisonment. Behind bars, they will lose their tender years of exploration, learning, and growth in the real world where they could interact with other people. Their stay inside a jail full of criminals will just provoke hatred, and the cycle of revenge. It is possible that from another fellow-gangster they will perfect the art of doing crime that will ignite their curiosity and rebellion against the society that convicted them. Sooner or later, they will become masters of pain. They will no longer fear being jailed anymore and with this severe stubborness we, as a society, will push again for death penalty. Death penalty means, "We are surrendering our hope for them... for we no longer have faith to the capacity of any hard-hearted criminals to change for the better... because we are too angry to love."
Forgiveness is often learned in giving second chances. It seems that, our society is in need of more patience so as to understand these juvenile delinquents.
Through counseling, mentoring, and guidance we could penetrate the deepest core of their hardened hearts. We need to listen to them so that we could respond to them with love and compassion.
.
Worse Comes to Worst--
.
Rights of a Child and the Child's Responsibilities--
I think, one of the sound solutions is to educate and to empower the parents, teachers, and those who take care of these children. Bantay Bata 163, on the extreme side, almost took away the rights of the parents, guardians, and teachers to discipline their children.
Yes, these children have their natural rights but beyond these rights are responsibilities that they need to shoulder for them to become mature citizens.
.
'Strike While the Iron is Hot'--
Everyone deserves a second chance.
.
Just saying. Opinyon lang po.

The Relevance of Scouting in Lessening the Case of Juvenile Delinquency

Scouting is one of the Youth Organizations that provides a safe environment for a child. For a century now, its proven method of teaching Scouts has remained effective and relevant up to this time. Scouting understands the needs of a child... his longing to be with his peers, his capacity to grow as a person and as a leader, his eagerness to learn new skills that would equip him to help others, and his natural desire to become a useful citizen.
Parents are welcome to participate and to support their child. Scouting is a good venue for teachers, Scouters, parents, and Scouts to learn, explore, and enjoy the outdoor activities in a fun way while inculcating in each Scout the needed learning and skills, proper values, servant-leadership, and the love for God.

John 1:19-28

John 1:19-28

19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, 'Who are you?'
20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'
21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'
22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself?'
23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for the Lord. Make his paths straight!'
24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,
25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the Prophet?'
26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-
27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'
28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.

Psalms 98:1, 2-3, 3-4

Psalms 98:1, 2-3, 3-4

1 [Psalm] Sing a new song to Yahweh, for he has performed wonders, his saving power is in his right hand and his holy arm.
2 Yahweh has made known his saving power, revealed his saving justice for the nations to see,
3 mindful of his faithful love and his constancy to the House of Israel. The whole wide world has seen the saving power of our God.
4 Acclaim Yahweh, all the earth, burst into shouts of joy!

First John 2:22-28

22 Who is the liar, if not one who claims that Jesus is not the Christ? This is the Antichrist, who denies both the Father and the Son.
23 Whoever denies the Son cannot have the Father either; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father too.
24 Let what you heard in the beginning remain in you; as long as what you heard in the beginning remains in you, you will remain in the Son and in the Father.
25 And the promise he made you himself is eternal life.
26 So much have I written to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.
27 But as for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you; since the anointing he gave you teaches you everything, and since it is true, not false, remain in him just as he has taught you.

28 Therefore remain in him now, children, so that when he appears we may be fearless, and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.

Galatians 4:4-7

4 but when the completion of the time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of the Law,
5 to redeem the subjects of the Law, so that we could receive adoption as sons.
6 As you are sons, God has sent into our hearts the Spirit of his Son crying, 'Abba, Father';
7 and so you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir, by God's own act.

Luke 2:16-21

16 So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.
17 When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him,
18 and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them.
19 As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as they had been told.
21 When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, the name the angel had given him before his conception.

Psalms 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8

2 Then the earth will acknowledge your ways, and all nations your power to save.
3 Let the nations praise you, God, let all the nations praise you.
5 Let the nations praise you, God, let all the nations praise you.
6 The earth has yielded its produce; God, our God has blessed us.

Exegesis:

The indicator that the people already received the blessing of God is by means of their appreciation of the great things of what God has done to them.

Numbers 6:22-27

22 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
23 'Speak to Aaron and his sons and say: "This is how you must bless the Israelites. You will say:
24 May Yahweh bless you and keep you.
25 May Yahweh let his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
26 May Yahweh show you his face and bring you peace."

27 This is how they must call down my name on the Israelites, and then I shall bless them.'

=====

Exegesis:

This is the commonly used Aaronic blessing given by Catholic priests before the end of the Mass to the people.

Bring you peace- This is the presence of Jesus Christ in one's life, the peace that the world cannot give.

Matthew 2:1-12

1 After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod, suddenly some wise men came to Jerusalem from the east
2 asking, 'Where is the infant king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose and have come to do him homage.'
3 When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem.
4 He called together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and enquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5 They told him, 'At Bethlehem in Judaea, for this is what the prophet wrote:
6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least among the leaders of Judah, for from you will come a leader who will shepherd my people Israel.'
7 Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately. He asked them the exact date on which the star had appeared
8 and sent them on to Bethlehem with the words, 'Go and find out all about the child, and when you have found him, let me know, so that I too may go and do him homage.'
9 Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out. And suddenly the star they had seen rising went forward and halted over the place where the child was.
10 The sight of the star filled them with delight,
11 and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and falling to their knees they did him homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.
12 But they were given a warning in a dream not to go back to Herod, and returned to their own country by a different way.

Psalms 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13

1 [Of Solomon] God, endow the king with your own fair judgement, the son of the king with your own saving justice,
2 that he may rule your people with justice, and your poor with fair judgement.
7 In his days uprightness shall flourish, and peace in plenty till the moon is no more.
8 His empire shall stretch from sea to sea, from the river to the limits of the earth.
10 the kings of Tarshish and the islands will pay him tribute. The kings of Sheba and Saba will offer gifts;
11 all kings will do him homage, all nations become his servants.
12 For he rescues the needy who calls to him, and the poor who has no one to help.
13 He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the needy from death.
=====
Exegesis:

This pertains to the coming of the Messiah. Jesus as a Messiah is characterized by the following: with fair judgment, with justice, his empire will stretch from sea to sea, all Kings will bow to him, he has a heart for the poor and the needy.

The kingdom of Jesus is a heavenly kingdom of love. This goes beyond expectations of the people that's why it was very hard to understand during his time.

Isaiah 60:1-6

1 Arise, shine out, for your light has come, and the glory of Yahweh has risen on you.

2 Look! though night still covers the earth and darkness the peoples, on you Yahweh is rising and over you his glory can be seen.
3 The nations will come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness.
4 Lift up your eyes and look around: all are assembling and coming towards you, your sons coming from far away and your daughters being carried on the hip.
5 At this sight you will grow radiant, your heart will throb and dilate, since the riches of the sea will flow to you, the wealth of the nations come to you;

6 camels in throngs will fill your streets, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; everyone in Saba will come, bringing gold and incense and proclaiming Yahweh's praises.

=====
Exegesis:

Light- Jesus is the light of the World. As in the Song of Simeon, "A light to be revealed to all nations." As model of Kings and rulers of the world, Jesus' ways are by mercy and compassion.
Glory of Yahweh- Jesus is the glory of Yahweh in a sense that Jesus made the invisible holiness of God visible.
On one sense, this pertains to the coming of the wise men (magi). They are people of reason-- men of science of their time who were guided by the stars (as astrologers). The wise men are considered pagans but they become witness to the birth of the Messiah. On their visit, faith and reason has met. After the encounter, their lives were changed from then on.
